World Water Day has been celebrated every March 22 since 1993 and reminds us of the 2.2billion people who live without access to safe drinking water. The main goal is to support the initiative of United Nations Sustainable Development – Water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Nowadays, water is under enormous pressure from the growing population, the demands of industry, agriculture, as well as from the climate change. In order to meet all the demands for water resources, societies often neglect the interests of the people.

The theme of this year’s Water Day is what water means to people, its value and how we can better protect this important resource. The value is much higher than the monetary price – for culture, education, health, economy and the environment. If we ignore any of these values, we risk this important and irreplaceable resource.

Do you know:

  • Today, one in three people do not have access to healthy drinking water
  • By 2050, as many as 5.7 billion people may be exposed to water shortages
  • A stable water supply can save the lives of over 360,000 newborns each year
  • If we limit the level of global warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, the pressure of climate change on water supplies will be reduced by 50%
  • Extreme weather has been the cause of over 90% of natural disasters in the past decade
  • By 2040, the expected increase in global energy consumption is over 25%, and the increase in water consumption is over 50%
